About the Berserkers
(following 2 paragraphs taken with permission from www.berserker.com)
Our wars were behind us. Earth had a unified government and mankind
had moved out from the planet of its birth. New worlds were settled
and with the wealth of the Galaxy at hand, poverty was eliminated.
Then came the first berserker attack. The berserker was a vast
automated fortress, its prime directive to eliminate all life.
It -- and many others like it -- was the inheritance of a war
fought between unknown interstellar empires, in some time that
could hardly be connected with any Earthly calendar. The berserker
machine hung over a planet colonized by humans and in two days
pounded the surface into a lifeless cloud of dust and steam.
These are the tales from the battles between life and non-life,
between the great killing machines we came to call berserkers
and humanity, all that it was or ever held dear. For of all the
starfaring races, only Man has brought with him untamed the heritage
and instinct of battle.
The Berserkers are a creation of author Fred Saberhagen. They
have been continuously in print for nearly 40 years. (First story
published 1963, first book 1967) They have also appeared in various
games, and will hopefully be seen in movie
form before too long.
The Berserker menace and the ensuing struggle of life against
its antithesis have become a mainstay of science fiction; the
themes and adventures the Berserker stories convey will continue
to speak to human readers for generations to come.

About The Taj
The Taj, this site, serves as a locus of information on everything
Berserker, to promote the books, and to provide a place for Berserker
fans to interact.
In the Berserker universe, The Taj is the mysterious locus at
the center of the Galaxy, the composition of which seems to transcend
physical space. It also seems to have something to do with the
final fate of all sentient life in the Galaxy. This of course
makes it of intense interest to the Berserkers. The Taj is most
illuminated in Berserker Man.
NOTE: this site was developed and is maintained with explicit
permission/authorization from Fred Saberhagen, for which I am
greatly appreciative. Again, "Berserker" is a registered

A note on fan fiction: for legal reasons, Fred
cannot condone any fan literature set in the Berserker universe,
and thus The Taj cannot host any such material.
