The Berserker series has spawned a good
deal of art in its various forms, much of it done by world-renowned
artists of science fiction. Here I hope to gather a gallery of
such art and related info. I plan at some point to have scans of
all of the various book covers and even some illustrations from a
few old magazines like Worlds of
If.

ARTISTS
A list of all known artists that have done anything for the many
incarnations of the Berserker series (mostly book covers). I've listed
exactly what item each artist worked on and given links to the artist's
website where one exists. I will eventually also have images of all
of the covers.
Jack Gaughan (1930-1985), was a celebrated and prolific artist
of science fiction. His work graced the covers and interiors of
scores of SF books and magazines, and he was the recipient of several
Hugo Awards, for Fan Artist (1967, and 1951 [awarded retrospectively
in 2001]) and Professional Artist (1967, 1968, 1969). In addition
to professional training at the Dayton Art Institute, he received
personal tutoring from famed fantasy and science fiction illustrator
Hannes Bok. He was a fan and student of science fiction for most
of his life.
Many of the Berserker short stories made their first appearances
in the likes of IF and Galaxy magazines. These were sometiems illustrated,
and often featured Gaughan's artwork. I have received exclusive
permission from Phoebe Gaughan, Jack's wife, to reproduce his Berserker
illustrations here on the Taj. "Jack was a great fan of Fred
Saberhagen," she said, "and I am sure he would be pleased
to be included in your ambitious effort." Inquiries about
Jack's work may be directed to Phoebe's email
address.
Using my Carmpan-like ability to reach out and collect vital bits
of culture and information, I have managed to get a hold of ALL
of the vintage magazine appearances of Berserker stories, and have
compiled here all of the illustrations by Jack Gaughan that I could
find. Please note that these images are copyright Jack Gaughan
and may not be reproduced without permission.
As there are 25 images in total, I've put them all together on
a separate page, so please click below to see the full gallery.

Exclusive Feature: the Evolution of a Piece of Cover
Art
David Mattingly's artwork for Berserkers: The Beginning (Baen
1998) and Berserker Raids (Berserker Works Ltd, Baen Software).
Original images reproduced with permission of David Mattingly,

Mattingly. Please visit his site as well: www.davidmattingly.com
I noticed a similarity between the cover art for the "Beginnings"
ominbus and the "Raids" computer game (see the GAMES
section). Having found Mr. Mattingly's website, I emailed him to
ask about. He not only generously provided me with the original
images and permission to reproduce them, but also gave me this
bit of background info:
You are right that there are a couple of different versions
of that cover. I did the first version very early in my career
while
I was working at Disney Studios, then did a revised painted version
for Amazing Stories magazine. Then Jim Baen at Baen Books bought
that version for the video game you sent me a copy of. A couple
of years later, Jim asked me to further jazz the cover up digitally,
and that is the version I am sending you now ["newer version"
below]. I will look for the earlier version, and if I can find
it, i will send you a scan of that also["older version"
below]. I think I may like the earlier version more--the later
version has more action and explosions, but the early version
has a more classic feel.
I hope that clears it up.

Ultimate Enemy Cover Art Chromium Card
I was lucky enough to find this absolute gem through a collector's
card dealer on the internet! Michael
Whelan's cover art for The
Ultimate Enemy is by far my favorite piece of Berserker artwork,
perfectly portraying the seemingly utter feebleness of life in the
face of the looming and unstoppable Berserker menace. This artwork
was featured in the 1995 Comic Images series of collector's cards
entitled "Other Worlds: Michael Whelan II." "The
Ultimate Enemy" was the last of six special chromium cards,
and it's very nice looking indeed. I've scanned it front and back
so you can see (click thumbnail for larger image):
This is a reproduction of a collector's card which I own, not a
reproduction of the original artwork itself. Original art is copyright
Michael Whelan.
Berserker art by Boris Vallejo
Boxed Set This is a scan of a boxed set put out by Ace Science Fiction
around 1980. It included Berserker, Berserker's Planet, The Ultimate
Enemy, and Berserker Man. The box featured the art which Boris
Vallejo did for the cover of the Ace version of Berserker.
I got this box signed by Fred Saberhagen, and he and his wife, Joan,
had apparently
never seen it before! I found it on eBay and have not seen it in
any used bookstores, but then again I haven't been looking either.
It probably turns up on eBay or with used book dealers now and then.

Poster Print
A print of that same artwork was given to me as a birthday
gift, signed by the artist! It's available in several sizes on his
website here.
The title he gives it is "Galaxy Battle." You can
also get prints of much more of his art and that of Julie Bell. (click

Fred Saberhagen was the Author Guest of Honor at LOSCON
30 (The annual
science fiction convention held by the Los
Angeles Science Fantasy Society (LASFS) on Nov 28-30, 2003).
Artist Guest of Honor, Teddy Harvia (aka David Thayer), being a talented
and humorous cartoonist, made the cover for the program. Your own 5th Historian
was informed directly by the artist that, in tribute to Fred Saberhagen, a
Berserker appears on this cover! The Berserker is the one being held by the
giant squid. Also note the artist's autograph along the side.

Illustration
for "Adventure of the Metal Murderer" by Chris Moore
This illustration appeared in the January
1980 edition of OMNI magazine, for the Berserker story "Adventure
of the Metal Murderer." Below you can see both
a scan from the magazine and a much higher-quality scan of the original
art, generously provided by Chris Moore himself. In the magazine,
the illustration spanned the entire two-pages (notice the break
in
the center). According to the artist, this piece was "originally
produced in 1976 for a book called 'Far Out' by Damon Knight published
by Methuen paperbacks." As soon as a copy of that volume
can be acquired, a scan of that version will be posted as well. These
images are copyright Chris Moore and are reproduced here with express
permission from the
artist. (click
